Donald Sexton died January 6, 2017 at Friendship Village of Columbus after an extended illness.
He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on April 21, 1925.
Donald graduated from Clay Township School in the first graduating class at age 17.
He joined the U.S. Navy and flew on 30 combat missions while stationed in England during WWII.
Donald was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He graduated from The Ohio State University with a Master's Degree in education and counseling.
Donald had a long and distinguished career in the Columbus Public Schools as a teacher, counselor, mentor and administrator.
During the 1960's, he was instrumental in fully integrating South High School.
Donald has been an active member in the Presbyterian and Disciples of Christ Churches all of his life.
In addition to his focus on education.
Donald served on various church boards: Scioto Presbyterian, Karl Road Christian Church, Disciples of Christ and the Metropolitan Area Church Council.
He was recently honored for his work and dedication by receiving the Living Faith Award honoring individuals who create a more hopeful, peaceful and faithful world.
One of his favorite authors was Jesse Stuart, who once said "I am a firm believer that a teacher lives on and on through his students. Good teaching is forever and the teacher is immortal."
Donald served his country, his God and his students while never seeking recognition.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Bolin) whom he married on February 28, 1950, by his father and mother, James and Florence Sexton, his brothers, Ed, Kenny, Paul, Charles, Elwood and Benjamin, and his sisters, Vontola Royce, Edith Royce and Lola Jones.
Donald is survived by several nieces and nephews, especially Rita Gahm and Ty Morris, his church family, especially June Nirote.
Funeral service will be Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Karl Road Christian Church, 5400 Karl Road Columbus, with visitation one hour prior to services.
Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park, Wheelersburg at 2:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church or the St. Joseph Indian School, 1301 N. Main St. Chamberlain S.D. 57325.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Newcomer Funeral Home NE Chapel, 3047 E. Dublin-Granville Rd. Columbus.
