Gary Lee McCoy, age 79, passed away on January 14, 2023 after a long illness. Gary was born to parents Lawrence William McCoy and Florence Rife McCoy Rowe in Grundy, Virginia on September 22, 1943. He is preceded in death by his father in 1947; his mother in 2018; sister, Anita (Rowe) Leach in 2000 and stepfather, Cecil Rowe in 1983.
Gary is survived by his wife, Bernice "Bonnie" McCoy; son, Larry and daughter-in-law, Noelle McCoy; beloved granddaughter, Caitlin and stepson, Brian Heizer. Other surviving family near and dear to his heart include his sisters, Debra Rowe and Cheryl Rowe; nieces, Melinda (Eric) Cunningham, Shayna Rowe and nephew, Dustin Rowe. Gary's extended family includes his many cousins in Virginia and West Virginia, and beyond; as well as friends throughout the country.
Gary was a 1963 graduate of Eastmoor High School in Columbus, Ohio. Holding a variety of occupations during his lifetime, he retired from the City of Columbus, Department of Public Service in 2013. Gary remained active during his retirement and could often be found enjoying bowling, boating, camping, traveling and spending winter months in Florida. He was rarely without a canine companion or two (or three, or four...) and spoiled his four-legged friends, especially Millie. Gary loved and cherished hosting the annual family Fourth of July cookout.
Per Gary's wishes, there will be no visitation, funeral or celebration of life observance. Instead, should you wish to honor Gary, spend quality time with those you love, give generously of your time to OhioHealth Hospice/Kobacker House, Special Olympics or the charity of your choice, adopt a dog, or cheer loudly on game day for your favorite team, unless your favorite team is playing against the Buckeyes, then Gary would prefer that you cheer for OSU. Go Bucks!
