Albert J. Giamporcaro

July 28, 1927 — March 23, 2021

Albert J. Giamporcaro, 93, of McDermott, OH passed away March, 23, 2021.

Albert was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July, 28, 1927 to the late Carmelo and Celestina (Feo) Giamporcaro, who immigrated to the US from Sicily, which lies off the southern tip of mainland Italy.

Albert is preceded in death by parents Carmelo and Celestina (Feo) Giamporcaro, sister Lucy (Giamporcaro) Dellagatta, and brother Samuel Giamporcaro all of Hammonton NJ, brother Joseph (Fene) Giamporcaro of VA, grandchild Mark Giamporcaro.

Surviving family includes, his loving wife and partner of 67 years Mary Lou (Gillette) Giamporcaro of McDermott OH, children John "Steve" Middaugh of Tampa FL, David (Laurie) Gillette of Crozet VA, Connie (Barry) Picklesimer of Lucasville OH, Randall (Lauri) Giamporcaro of Tampa FL, Tony Giamporcaro of McDermott OH, and Paula Giamporcaro of McDermott OH. Ten grandchildren, Marissa, Taylor, Obel, Christa, Mari Jo, Nicholas, Celeste, Tara, Tori, and Jed. Seventeen great grandchildren. Brother Louis (Lory) Giamporcaro of Arlington VA.

Albert served his country as a Paratrooper, 2nd platoon, Company B, 27th battalion toward the end of WWII. From that point his life led him in the direction in a career as a painter focusing on high steal structures, from numerous bridges, one such being, the Delaware Bridge spanning the Delaware River connecting Delaware to New Jersey, to electric high tensions towers, 100ft. towers in the Iron ore fields of Minnesota, and into industrial settings.

As his work took him from state to state, construction of the atomic energy uranium enrichment plant in Pike county OH brought him into the Portsmouth area, as to answer the question, how did this Italian guy from Hammonton NJ meet his soulmate Mary from McDermott OH. From that point in 1954, together they continued their life forward following his work from state to state, eventually making roots outside of Buffalo NY for some eighteen years.

Bowing to Mary's wishes of wanting to return home to McDermott OH, in 1976 that wish was fulfilled when he gave up his life as a union painter, risking all, decided to buy a small country general store out from Portsmouth several miles out on route 73 in an area known by the old timers as "The Flats" of Lombardsville (McDermott), previously Pertuset's Grocery, they gave it the name "Wayside Market". The plan was they would operate the store for ten years and retire.

Thirty two successful years later in 2008 at the age of 82 he decided it was time to retire. For him It was a heart-torn decision with the closing of the doors to all the local customers that had become friends and neighbors he enjoyed interacting with daily for those 32 years. From our family, we would like to thank our friends and neighbors for the fulfillment you may not have known or realized you provided him and to all of us. Thank you all.
