Henriquez (nee Brown)
Alfreda Katherina Henriquez was born July 10, 1924, in Nassau, N.P. Bahamas, the first child of the union between Caroline Augusta Johnson and Alfred Brown. She had two younger brothers, Lawrence Osborne Theodore ("Teddy") Brown and DeWitt Talmadge ("Witty") Brown, both of whom predeceased her. Alfreda's father died when the children were quite young, and Alfreda quit her formal education to help care for her brothers and to work in her uncle's ice cream parlor. Discovering that she had a talent for sewing, knitting, crocheting, and the like, she made clothes for the family and earned spending money by making dresses for neighbors.
On June 12, 1944, Alfreda married F. Gaston Henriquez, at St. Agnes Anglican Church, Nassau, Bahamas. In 1945, 1946 and 1949, the couple had three daughters, Stephanie, Camille, and Claudette. Seeking greater opportunities, the family immigrated to the United States, arriving in West Palm Beach, Florida, in 1951. Their son, François Henriquez, II, was born in 1957.
For nearly 50 years, Alfreda applied her talents to the operation of her own dressmaking business in West Palm Beach. Simultaneously, she devoted herself to her two other passions – caring for her family and serving the Lord and her community as an active leader in Ephesus SDA Church in West Palm Beach. Never forgetting her disappointment about having to curtail her education, one of her proudest moments was in May 2005, when, at age 80, she finally earned her high school diploma.
In March 2012, Mrs. Henriquez was predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years. She leaves behind four children, Stephanie Henriquez of Columbus, OH, Camille Howard of New York, NY, Claudette (Lawrence) Jouett of Newberry, FL and François (Laura Stephenson) Henriquez II of Lawrence, KS; grandchildren, Angel (Joe Bulott) Lee, Gabrielle Jouett, Alexander Henriquez and Nicholas Henriquez; and one great-grandchild, Gabrielle Michaela Lee.
After an extended illness, Alfreda departed this life on May 11, 2013.
