Barbara Helenberger

September 14, 1943 — September 1, 2022

Barbara "Sue" Helenberger, age 78 of Gahanna died September 1, 2022 at her home at Story Point Gahanna retirement home after a long, courageous battle with COPD.

She was born Sept. 14, 1943 in Springfield, IL, to Marty Bowell and Charlotte (Smith) Bowell, and was a long-time resident of the Columbus area after her husband retired from the Air Force.

She married James Helenberger on June 23, 1962. He died June 11, 1993.

Mrs. Helenberger worked at Northland Coin Laundry as a laundry attendant until her retirement.

She was a member of Linden Lutheran Church and enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint, karaoke, and anything involving her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It is a very rare picture indeed that does not have her surrounded by her family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Angela Easterling, and her beloved husband Jim.

Survivors include her daughter, Marcia (Kevin) McGee of Amesville; four sons, Frank (Cheryl) Helenberger of Athens, James (Diana) Helenberger of Broken Arrow, OK, Thomas (Malisa) Helenberger of Huber Hts, and Kirk Helenberger of Centerville; Two brothers, Rocco and Michael Bowell, both of Niles; Four sisters, Ms. Anita Simini , Ms. Maryrose Boag, and Ms. Theresa Namish, all of Niles, and Miss Patricia Bowell of Warren; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

It was her wish that there be no calling hours, the family will hold a graveside ceremony with interment at Mifflin Township Cemetery in Gahanna, Ohio.

The family would like to thank Wesley Hospice for the loving care of Barbara for the past year, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wesley Hospice at 4588 Wesley Woods Blvd, Ste 2A, New Albany, Ohio 43054.
