Bernice Francis Stiltner

December 23, 1934 — January 27, 2024

Bernice "Bernie" Francis Stiltner, a cherished wife, devoted mother, adoring grandmother and beloved sister, was promoted to glory on January 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at her home.

Born on December 23, 1934, to Roy and Ella Fry in Columbus, Ohio, Bernie grew up alongside her seven sisters in the warmth of their home on Azelda Street. She attended Linden McKinley High School, graduating in 1953, where she found her passion for music as a proud member of the school band, showcasing her talent with the French horn.

In 1954, Bernie embarked on a lifelong partnership with Herman "Dick" Stiltner, sharing 42 years of marriage and blessing the world with six children: Donna Valentine, James Stiltner, Patricia Marcum, Robert Stiltner, Cheri Davis and Raymond Stiltner.

Bernie lived by the philosophy that life's true treasures lay not in material possessions but in the love and bonds of family. She and Dick raised their children in a humble 672 sq. ft. home on Azelda Street, where she lived for 64 years. Bernie cherished every moment spent with her expanding family, which grew to include 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Throughout her career, Bernie dedicated herself to service, working at Big Bear, Gold Circle and eventually retiring from the State of Ohio in 1997. However, it was the moments shared with her sisters that brought her the greatest joy, from crafting and sewing to euchre nights and treasured sister vacations.

Bernie lived a vibrant and fulfilling life, characterized by her caring nature, independence and unwavering support for her loved ones. Her infectious smile could light up any room, and her family will forever cherish memories of eating her homemade chicken and noodles, her heartfelt birthday cards adorned with underlines symbolizing her love and her trademark glass of water with "cold ice" and a spoon in hand.

Bernie was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ella Fry, her beloved husband, Herman "Dick" Stiltner, sisters Mildred (Ralph) Hogue, Jacqueline (Herbert) Rhodes, Lou Ann (Paul) Uhrig and brothers-in-law John Ankrum, Denver Root and Lee Hiell.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion, survived by her sisters Jean Ankrum, Beatrice Root, Sue (John) Adkins and Jody Hiell, her six children and their spouses, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandson.

Services to celebrate Bernie's life will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 3047 E. Dublin-Granville Road, Columbus, OH 43231. Visitation will take place on February 4, 2024, from 2-4 pm, followed by a funeral service on February 5, 2024, at 11 am. Bernie will be laid to rest following the service beside her beloved husband at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Bernie's spirit of love and compassion will continue to inspire and guide her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in eternal peace, her memory cherished forever in the hearts of those whose lives she touched.
