Betty Jean Chappell

June 3, 1931 — July 14, 2017

Betty J. Chappell, 86, of Columbus, Ohio, returned home to be with Christ, and with her husband Frank, on Friday, July 14, 2017. She was born June 3, 1931, in Pensacola, Florida, the only child of Charles and Cleo Holland. She is survived by many cousins, including Carolyn Bozeman and Vicki Carlton of Milton, Florida. On August 31, 1957, she married S. Frank Chappell III, of Houston, Texas. Together they had three children: Cheryl (David) Muir, David (Lori), and John; and two granddaughters: Allison Muir and Ashley.

Betty graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor's degree in 1953, and, in 1955, completed a Master's degree in Physical Education, at Smith College in Massachusetts. She then went on to teach Physical Education at the University of Texas, where she and Frank met at a Church picnic.

Betty became a leader in the Girl Scouts of America in 1967, a position she held for 12 years. She fostered a self-determined spirit in her troops, journeying with them to: Washington DC and meeting Senator John Glenn; to Europe and the Girl Scout Chalet in Switzerland; and ultimately guiding her scouts to achieve the highest rank, the First Class Award.

Betty utilized her studies during the early 1980's, coaching soccer at Worthington High School. In 1984, she began work at Central Ohio Christian School, serving as Physical Education Instructor, to Principal and Administrator. She aided the growth of COCS toward well over 100 students, maintaining her focus of providing a solid education founded on learning a love for God. The school became known for high education standards and meeting the needs of the surrounding community.

Throughout her life Betty was able to succeed in her accomplishments while remaining committed to her family. She was an active mom and individual, participating in tennis tournaments, and ensuring to instruct her children in sports. She wholeheartedly recruited them for white-water rafting, skiing, camping, and horseback riding at Marmom Valley Farms.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 pm, Friday, July 21, 2017 at the Northland Church of Christ, 4581 Cleveland Ave., Columbus, Oh., 43231, where the funeral service will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, July 22, 2017. Ray Thorne officiating. Entombment at Kingwood Memorial Park.
