Carmen Lee Conrad passed away at her Canal Winchester, Ohio home on September 16, 2023. She was born April 6, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio.
Carmen's early years were devoted to her family and her community, where she was active in fundraising events, school and PTA functions, and in civic issues, notably foster care for teens and the Save North High School campaign. Later she and her husband Barry dedicated themselves to beekeeping and the family business, Conrad Hive and Honey. She educated youth about beekeeping and the importance of bees in the environment, and became a well-known honey judge supporting local competitions. She could be found at the Ohio State Fair at her honey booth where her honey-based foods, candles and soaps were always on display, or the Lithopolis Honey Fest as a founding member where she annually hosted the Honey Queen, or at the Clintonville Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. She always found time for her great loves of pie baking and sewing. Carmen will be dearly missed by her family, friends and her many customers and associates.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Emma and Warren F. McKitrick, and her husband of 34 years, Barry E. Conrad. She is survived by her children: Cathy (David) Ferguson, Andrea Engle (Mike Colón), Bradley (Colleen) Conrad, Jeffrey (Mindy) Conrad; Grandchildren: Emily (Sam), Sara (Daniel), Hannah (Jimmy), Kelsey, Karissa (Eric), Tess, Henry, Joey; Great-grandchildren: Piper, Hollis, Willow, Beckett, Grady; her sister Loretta (John) Biddle, her brothers Mac and Fred McKitrick; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Celebration of Life Open House will be held Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm at Conrad Hive and Honey located at 6240 Wright Rd., Canal Winchester, Ohio 43110. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Beekeeping Federation (ABF) Queen Program (details at abfnet.org).
