Carol Saunders Deyo, 84, of Galena, Ohio, passed away peacefully at her home on Sept. 3, 2024. She was born on Jan. 8, 1940, to the late Ralph and Lillian Saunders.
Carol is survived by her children Brad (Marcia) and Brian (Brenda), her grandchildren, Tyler (Karina) and Jessica (Joey), whom she loved very much, along with the family’s pets, Pepper and Finn. In her death, she joins her beloved husband of 55 years, Charles “Chuck” Deyo.
Carol graduated from Linden-McKinley High School in Columbus and went on to hold numerous professional titles. Her last role was with Westerville City Schools, where she worked in the administrative building for several years before retiring.
A person of many passions, Carol was always known to keep busy with projects that fed her soul. Perhaps most notably, she was a member of an artists collective and launched her own business, Sand Castle Jewelry Designs, where she sold a number of beautiful, handmade pieces of jewelry.
She was also an avid lover of tennis, a sport that she played for many years. Additionally, she enjoyed ice skating, painting, gardening, and was a member of a boating club alongside her husband, Chuck.
Carol was a spirited reader and was a longtime member of a book club, which she enjoyed greatly. She was an active member at the Galena United Methodist Church and a devout supporter of a number of causes, among them being women’s rights, parks, and creating a better world for children and animals.
Above all else, Carol was most proud of her role as a wife, mother, sister and grandparent. Though she had numerous passion projects, she dedicated her life to being the mother to two boys, who kept her on her toes even in her old age, and was the greatest supporter to her husband. Following the death of Chuck — the love of her life — she sought to keep his memory alive in a number of ways, including by naming a park bench at Berkshire Township Park in his honor.
In her death, she also joins her sister, Pat, whom she considered one of her best friends, along with a number of other family pets through the years: Patches, Cabo, Angel, Tigger, Bailey, Brandy and more.
In her next life, she will carry with her the numerous traditions and passions shared among friends and family, including a love for Tom Brady and polenta pie. Among her favorite memories, she cherished the time spent with her grandchildren making crafts, taking trips to COSI and visiting the Deyo House in New Paltz, Christmas dinners and traveling out West.
A memorial reception will be held on Monday, Sept. 16 from 2-4 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3047 E Dublin Granville Rd, Columbus, OH 43231. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Carol’s memory to Ohio Health Kobacker House, 800 McConnell Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43214.
