CHARLES RAYMOND SPELLMAN

'Chuck', 'Uncle Chuck', 'Papaw Chuck', 'Dad', 'Brother', even heard Shirley call him 'Chuckie' a few times when she was trying to put him in his place (which rarely happened). The man wore many hats, but they were all centered on Family, God, Country and his Union (IBEW Local 683: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers).

Chuck grew up hard and tough under Harold A Spellman and Frances (Keaton). He was never one to back down from a fight (literally) for his beliefs. For Chuck, fighting life's battles and overcoming them defined a man's success. Chuck's love for his older brother Eugene (deceased) and younger sister Betty (Stuff) engrained in him the importance of family bonds. The eventual breakup of Harold and Frances reinforced Chuck's ideals of what a family should be and his close additional relationships to his brother, Harold Jr, and sister, Julie (Logan) attest to his ideals.

As a youth he began his lifelong appreciation for firearms by adding notches to his BB gun for each unlucky bird in his vicinity and later became a proud member of the NRA. He enjoyed football and excelled in baseball. Later in life he developed his passion for golf, boasting not one but two holes in one. The game appealed to all his underlying philosophies; 'man vs. himself', 'man vs. man', 'man vs. nature'. Chuck appreciated all of his life's intricate challenges and met them head on.

High school was not Chuck's highest priority, but he earned his diploma from Grove City H.S. despite working multiple jobs from 17 onward to support his wife Nancy (Burcham) and daughter Tonda (Stegman) and son Shawn. Independence and personal responsibility were Chuck's bedrock principals as he steadfastly supported Tonda and son Shawn into adulthood. To do this, he worked days and studied nights learning his Electrician's trade. He also was the driving force behind a successful Amway distributorship and helped others achieve through his efforts.

Later in life, Chuck fell in love with Shirley (McCollister) whom he married and who became his beloved companion until her untimely death. Chuck devoted himself to Shirley, their home in which he took great pride, and his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching sporting events and being affectionately known as "Papa". Chuck and Shirley traveled extensively and delighted in sharing many of their travels with extended family. He remained a caring stepdad to Lisa (Carrel) and Kimber (Bandy), even after the death of their mother.

Chuck was a fiercely independent individual whose faith in God brightly shown through his numerous acts of generosity with his time and talents. He and Shirley dedicated their time and energy to the Grove City Noon Lions, where they made a lasting impact on their community. His faith in God, focus on individual responsibility, love of country identified Chuck as a solidly conservative Independent and lent credence to his overwhelming support of unionized labor. His was an interesting political stance and he was more than willing to entertain, discuss, debate and argue (in that order) with his 'left coast, tree hugging, liberal' son-in-law from California.

Chuck had an unbending spirit to do things his way. He lived with energetic enthusiasm, grounded in hard work from which he earned true satisfaction and enjoyment. He harbored great pride in the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and took comfort from the love he shared with all of them and his friends.

He will be sorely missed among us, but an amazing addition to the kingdom of heaven.
