Daniel L. Schoenstra

Daniel LeRoy Schoenstra, 79, of Columbus, Ohio entered into rest on December 26, having fought an extended illness valiantly. Dan was born on October 4, 1942 to Franklin Thompson and Harriet Marie Schoenstra, the youngest of 4 children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John, sisters Anna and Margaret, and daughter Lisa. He is survived by his son, Thomas Schoenstra of South Carolina, daughters Margaret Jensen (Vince) of Kentucky, Lenore (Curt) Belile of Virginia, eight grandchildren, one great grandchild, many nieces and nephews, and fiancée Maureen Dreschel of Collins, OH.
Dan lived a life of service. He was a US Army veteran and absolutely loved his country and cherished the American flag. He proudly served in Vietnam, and spent 3 years in active service as well as 4 years in the Army Reserves. He served as a police officer in Columbus, Kentucky, and West Virginia. He spent the remainder of his work life driving buses for Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, where he also taught safety classes and proper wheelchair securement. After retirement, he returned to driving and spent the last decade driving a shuttle bus for University Village in Columbus.
Dan had many hobbies. He loved photography and working with electronics. At one time he built color organs for stereo systems, and miniature models with working lights. He loved all genres of music and enjoyed symphonies when he could attend. He loved being in the outdoors fishing and hunting, or just spending time enjoying God's creation. He was an avid weapons enthusiast. His collection was modest, although he coveted many types of weapons. Dan will be missed by his family and many friends.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at Northlawn Memorial Gardens, 7060 OH-3 in Westerville Ohio on Friday, January 14, 2022 at 10:30am.
Memorial Mass will be held on January 8 at 11:00 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in New London, Ohio. Luncheon and fellowship will follow in the church basement.
