While always referring to his beloved Kentucky as The Holy Land, Davey Ray Castle entered the true Holy Land on Tuesday, October 9, at the age of 87 from his home in Westerville, Ohio. Born on June 3, 1937, in Nippa, Johnson County, Kentucky, Davey was one of eight siblings growing up together in Dogwood Holler. True to his Kentucky roots, he loved fishing, hunting, tending a garden, The Paintsville Herald, and The Big Sandy News. He was a Godly man that never met a stranger, was always ready with a joke, and was notrious for working a good deal.
Davey moved to Ohio for work in 1957, and found his soulmate, Ruth Ann, who he married in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960-62, then spent more than 40 years working in tree trimming for Asplundh and Nelson Tree Service. After retiring in 1999, Davey worked part-time for Doran’s Farm Market, driving a tractor to take visitors out to the strawberry fields.
Davey fiercely loved God and served as a deacon of Columbus First Free Will Baptist Church for more than 50 years. At the time of his passing, he was a member of the Gahanna Free Will Baptist Church.
Davey is preceded in death by parents Dave and Katie Castle, brother Otis Castle, sisters Dorcie Daniel, Betty Ward, Faye Patrick, and great grandson Austin Drakulic.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Ann, sons David (April) and Dan (Rolanda), grandchildren Michael (Lindsey), Marie (Tony), Matthew (Bethany), Maddy (Luke), Bradley (Emily), and Samantha. Davey also immensely loved the company of his great grandchildren, Tyler (Savannah), Collin, Addison, Caleigh, Trenton, Nora, Olivia, Macayla, Harper, and Hayden. He is also survived by brother Gene Castle and sisters Jane Draghi and Joy Reeser.
