Donald J. Hammond, 93, of Columbus, Ohio passed away from complications of COVID-19 on Saturday, January 15, 2022, surrounded by his family.
He was a warm-hearted gentleman with a kind, playful and lovable spirit. A dutiful son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He enjoyed his flower and vegetable garden, canning the produce he grew, reading, spending time at Indian Lake and with his family. Don was born on December 30, 1928, in New Lexington, Ohio to Wilbur R. and Ethel M. (Snider) Hammond.
A Veteran of the Korean War (Army) who retired (30 years) from Commercial Lovelace Motor Freight. He was a faithful, longtime parishioner of St. Aloysius Catholic Church.
He is survived by his two daughters, Lisa (Byron) Murphy of Columbus, Ohio; Amy Hammond of Honolulu, Hawaii; granddaughter, Lindsey (Chris) Hartford, Sunbury, Ohio; two great-grandsons, Zane Briggs and Aiden Branson; numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents; his wife (56 years) Glenna; son David; brothers, Ernest, Richard (Lillian) and Roy (Mary Pat) Hammond; sisters, Evelyn (John) Kerber, Beatrice (Louis) Southwick.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, from 4-7pm at Newcomer-SW Chapel, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, OH 43123. The family requests that facial masks be worn when attending.
Mass will be held at 10am on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at St. Aloysius Catholic Parish, 2165 West Broad St., Columbus, OH 43223. The graveside burial service will take place at 1pm at New Lexington Cemetery, 440 Swigart St., New Lexington, OH 43764. Graveside military honors service provided by Junction City American Legion.
