Donald Mers

November 23, 1933 — November 23, 2022

Donald L. Mers, went to his eternal reward on his 89th birthday, surrounded by his family. He was born November 23, 1933 to Charles and Ruth Mers and was the youngest of four children. Don was blessed with two sisters and a brother; Irma, Thelma, and Howard who were already waiting for his arrival at heaven's gate as well as the multitude of others.

Don lived his first years of life in Bradford, Ohio. There he fell in love with trains and wanted to grow up to become a railroader following in his father's footsteps. He loved growing up in Bradford so much that he brought a jar of soil with him when the family moved to Columbus.

Growing up on the Hilltop he attended and graduated from Columbus West High School. Sports was his passion all throughout high school. He played on the baseball and football teams, and enjoyed reminiscing about the various plays on the field. In later years of life his sport was golf and he became an avid golfer.

As a teenager, his favorite hobbies included working on his 1948 Chevy in the bay of Scheiks garage at Eldon and Broad St. There he and his buddy Hank Teeters, created dream cars and raced their cars against any one who would challenge them going west on Broad St.

As an adult, Don became a painting contractor by trade. A perfectionist, he developed a wonderful reputation among members of the Ohio State University Athletic Department and Faculty homes. He was a big Ohio State fan and even attended the 1969 Rose Bowl.

Don became a follower of Christ at a very young age and remained faithful all throughout his teenage years. He was a prayer warrior interceding for others daily, especially his family. When Don prayed out loud it seemed all of heaven was awakened. He wanted everyone to know about the love of Christ. As a member of Cypress Wesleyan Church, he served many years, as a Board Member, Sunday School teacher, volunteering wherever needed, and organized a neighborhood outreach ministry. He was a counselor with the Billy Graham Crusade as well.

In 1977, Don met the love of his life Joyce; they married during the blizzard of January 1978. They had a beautiful marriage that truly honored and loved one another. Together they treasured family time above everything else.

Don is survived by his dear wife Joyce, children Lynn (Jim) Patterson, Bill (Debbie) Mers, Joy( Ken) Lloyd, Todd (Ashley) Mers, Julie (Warren) Byle, 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Two grandchildren are deceased.
