Donald R. Newkirk, age 86 of Westerville, OH passed away
May 2, 2013. He was born in Hamilton, OH January 5, 1927, son of Stanton Mathew Newkirk and Mary Elizabeth (Gallaher) Newkirk-Hunter and is a graduate of Hamilton High School and Miami University of Ohio with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
He served in the United States Navy 1945-1946. Don was affiliated with the Ohio Hospital Association for 30 years, serving the last 18 years as president of the association. Don had a distinguished career as a health care professional, having received numerous awards in health care, including the prestigious Silver Medal Award of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and having published more than 25 scholarly articles concerning health care.
He was also the recipient of the Order of Merit—Grade of Caballero—from the Federal Government of Ecuador for his work in equipping hospitals in that country.
After his retirement in 1989 he served as Consultant and Executive in Residence with the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health Graduate Program in Health Services Management and Policy.
Don is survived by his wife of 36 years, Peggy Wills Newkirk; children Melinda Newkirk Corn, Jeffrey Newkirk; stepchildren Debra Maxwell, Dan Spencer II, Stephany Spencer; grandchildren Lindsey Spencer, Dan Spencer III, Mitchell Maxwell and 5 great grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held at Rose Hill Burial Park, Hamilton, OH. In lieu of flowers, contributions would be appreciated for The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
