Doris M. Black

April 13, 1931 — February 9, 2020

Doris Mae Carroll Black, age 88, most recently of Grove City, Ohio passed on to her heavenly home on February 9, 2020 after complications of debilitating lower back compression fractures overcame her. She was born on April 13, 1931 in Athens, Alabama to the late Hector E. Carroll and Gladys M. Bowers Carroll.

Beloved wife of the late Rev. Thomas Black and loving mother of five, Doris is survived by her children, Patricia A. (Gary) Boggs, Jackie L. (Terry) Curtis, Sandra K. (George) Spohn, Thomas W. (Cristol) Black, Sharon B. Mason; seven grandchildren, Christian C. Curtis and Lauren E. L. Curtis, James T. (Katie) Spohn, Jacob M. (Ashley) Spohn, Eli D. (Heather) Mason, Chelsi M. (Bryan Hosea) Mason and Levi T. (Hayley Taylor) Mason; foster granddaughter, Laura Healey; five great-grandchildren, Ryder Spohn, Chloe and Carly Spohn and Carson and Carter Mason; sisters, Alene M. (the late Philip G.) Rizzo, Vera L. (the late James D.) Jordan; brother, James R. (Ruth A.) Carroll; her late brother, Frederick A. Carroll; and many dear extended family members.

Doris married Thom on Valentine's Day in 1950 and they spent 50 years of their lives serving God as pastor and wife of Baptist churches in New York, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and Louisiana. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Grove City where the couple relocated following the life-changing disaster of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Doris was a direct descendant of Pocahontas on her mother's side which was an interesting and fun claim to fame. Her delicious spaghetti and meatballs was her signature dish. She was a dedicated Christian woman and pastor's wife, busy and loving mother and caring grandmother. In earlier years, she enjoyed gospel singing and sewing, later watching television game shows, reading Christian fiction and excelled at word puzzles, but she most loved spending time with family. Doris will be dearly missed on this earth but will surely be reunited with all her loved ones in heaven and we rejoice in her final healing.
