Although she was an orphaned child with little opportunity, she saw her own children's potential and insisted on music lessons to nurture the gifts she knew God had placed in them. She was a devoted member of Columbus First Church of the Nazarene until its closing, serving in the nursery for decades. Later in life, at the age of 72, she was employed by Eddie Bauer Outlet in Columbus where she worked until age 87.
