Dorothy (Dottie) Painter was born in Zanesville, Ohio on December 27, 1950, and passed away in Columbus, Ohio on November 11, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Dorothy Painter. She is survived by her wife, Marya Kolman; stepchildren, Brendan, Jared, and Marissa; grandchildren, Aria, Harrison, and Reese; and many friends and relatives.
Dottie graduated from Zanesville High School and then moved to Columbus to study at The Ohio State University where she earned a B.A. in Education, a M.A. in Journalism, a M.A. in Public Administration, and a Ph.D. in Communications. She worked at OSU for over 20 years as an academic counselor, a lecturer for the Women's Studies Department, and as the director of OSU LGBT Student Services. Dottie attended OSU College of Law when she was in her forties and following graduation, was a private practice attorney for the remainder of her life.
Dottie was passionate about advocating for social justice and equal rights for all. She volunteered for many organizations including serving as a director on the boards of Stonewall Columbus, the Ohio Human Rights Bar Association, and the Buckeye Regional Anti-Violence Organization (BRAVO.) She enjoyed traveling and spending leisure time with family and friends. Her favorite vacation destination was the annual Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. Dottie was devoted to her dogs Yoda and Millie.
