Dr. Kenneth L. Hollenbeck, 92, died peacefully at home in Minerva Park, Sunday, March 24, 2013, following a short illness. Dr. Hollenbeck was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 13, 1920, to the late Lloyd Louis Hollenbeck and Elizabeth R. Driscoll.
He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, NY and received his B.S. from Hampden-Sydney College in Va. where he had a football scholarship. He then went on to earn his DDS degree from University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa.
After graduation he served as a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps until transferred to the Navy aboard an APL-24. After WWII ended, he was stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort McClelland, Alabama.
In 1946, he married Genevieve Hampson and they enjoyed 46 years together. They had three daughters, Helen, Beth and Lynn. He practiced dentistry for forty years in Poughkeepsie, NY until retiring to New Smyrna Beach, FL in 1985.
Dr. Hollenbeck has been a member of Rotary International since 1950 and a life member of Dutchess County Dental Society, 9th District Dental Society, NY State Dental Society, American Dental Society and the American Legion.
During the 70's, he owned a stable of standardbred pacers that raced regularly at Monticello Raceway in NY.
After the death of his wife Genevieve in 1992, he married Margaret A. Holfinger in 1994 and they divided their time between Ohio and Florida. They enjoyed traveling and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity having been a part of work projects in New Zealand and the Philippines. In New Smyrna Beach, he attended the United Church of Christ and volunteered at the "Little Theatre".
He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy"; daughters, Beth Hollenbeck of Winter Springs, Fl and Lynn (George) Sutter of Owings Mills, MD; grandchildren, Melanie Sutter and Steven (Alexis) Sutter; great-granddaughter, Kennedy. Survivors also include his wife's children, Melissa (Marvin) Trickett, James (Diane) Holfinger, Sue Kapper and Jean Blackstone; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Helen Hollenbeck of Costa Rica.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2013, 4-7 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, NE Chapel, 3047 East Dublin-Granville Road, Columbus, OH 43231. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on April 13, 2013, at Trinity United Church of Christ,1180 Shanley Drive, Columbus, OH 43224. Memorial Contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
