Dr. Michael Dick, born to Mary Ann and Jan Dick in Shelby, Ohio in 1956, passed away on May 3, 2023, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle against cancer.
Mike was a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Wexner Medical Center. As a board-certified emergency medical physician, he served as the Ohio State University East Medical Director for 24 years. In this leadership position he was instrumental in initiating several clinical programs that broadened the access to health care for the East Side of the Columbus community. He was passionate about all patients receiving quality health care, and for this commitment, he received the Ohio EMS Jack B. Liberator Lifetime Achievement Award, and was inducted into the 2023 cohort of the Mazzaferri-Ellison Society of Master Clinicians.
Throughout his life he worked for positive change and constant improvement - "no" was never an acceptable answer where change was warranted. Mike always treated everyone around him with kindness and dignity. He truly believed that everyone's role was necessary for an organization to succeed and he prided himself on being acquainted with many and he advocated for all.
He was passionate about teaching all in both the professional and personal settings. He had a deep sense of responsibility; Mike took care of everyone surrounding him and loved deeply. He was particularly committed to his children, was a wonderful father and enjoyed spending time with them as well as believing in their ultimate potential.
Mike was an outdoor enthusiast who loved camping, mountain climbing, running, skiing, fishing, and spending time at the ocean. He most enjoyed the outdoors when he was sharing that time with friends and family. He climbed Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Kilimanjaro, ran 13 marathons, and participated in several Pelotonia bike rides to support the fight against cancer.
He is survived by his loving wife Sondra Shellman; father, Jan Dick; brother, Daniel Dick; children Kathryn Crane (Justin), Kelsey Dick, David Dick (fiancé Jayme Vieweg); stepchildren Garrett White, and Sydney White; and two grandchildren, Kylie and Alexander Crane.
