Dr. Dwight Alden Powell, 82, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and physician, passed away on February 19, 2025. His life was filled with unwavering love for his family, faith, and career.
He now lives on in heaven, reunited with his daughter, Lori, his sister, Phyllis, and his parents, Dwight and Genevieve. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his children, Jennifer (Adam) Wyse and Justin (Karly) Powell; his grandchildren, Nathan, Luke, Hannah, and Abigail Wyse; and his sister, Joann (Dick) Gove.
Dwight shared 57 beautiful years of marriage with the love of his life, Carol. Their love story was one of steadfast commitment, deep affection, and endless joy. They were best friends and partners in all things, whether traveling together, making lifelong memories with friends and family, or simply enjoying each other’s company. Dwight was also a devoted father who would do anything for his children and grandchildren.
A man deeply rooted in his Christian faith, Dwight found great joy in playing trombone in the orchestra at Grace Polaris Church, where his music became another way of worshiping and giving back.
Beyond his family and faith, Dwight’s life’s work was helping others through medicine. He made a profound impact in his field, spending decades as Chief of the Infectious Disease Department at Nationwide Children's Hospital and Director of the Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency Program at The Ohio State University. His passion for medical education and patient care led him to travel the world, sharing his expertise as a speaker and shaping the future of medicine. He passed his medical legacy down to his daughter, Jennifer, who works as an urgent care physician at Children’s Hospital. His influence reached far and wide, touching the lives of colleagues, students, and countless patients.
A lifelong Buckeye fan, Dwight was a season ticket holder for both Ohio State football and basketball, a tradition he shared with his son, Justin. Dwight found immense joy in watching this year's team win the national championship, often remarking on the players’ faith and how inspiring it was to see them share their beliefs on such a big stage.
A visitation will be held on Monday, February 24, from 11 a.m. to noon at Grace Polaris Church (8225 Worthington Galena Road, Westerville, OH 43081), followed by a funeral service at noon.
