Earl “Jug” Derring of Grove City, Ohio born December 2, 1932, passed away on December 11, 2024, at Storypoint Grove City. Jug was born at home to Herman and Louise Derring. He graduated from North High School in 1950 and went on to become an auto mechanic, owning his own service stations both in Grandview, Ohio, one a Sohio and the other a Marathon. He was an active member of the Ohio Dealer’s Association. Jug was also a salesman for NAPA and a driver for Revel Auto Parts.
Jug was a longtime member of Buckeye Christian Church in Grove City. He was also a member of the Grove City Senior Center, where he was an avid Wii bowler and well-known actor, having starred in many Senior Center plays. Jug also enjoyed watching his OSU Buckeyes!! He had great memories of selling concessions in the aisles of OSU stadium as a young man. Jug also served in the Army National Guard as part of the artillery group. He did his training at Camp Perry.
Jug touched so many lives in his ten decades! He never met a stranger and loved to share a laugh.
Jug is preceded in death by his parents Herman and Louise Derring, his daughter Cheryl Boden, son Michael Evans, grandsons Brett Johnson and Trevor Evans, and great-granddaughter Tori Anderson. He is loved and survived by his wife Madeline Derring, children Susan (Rick) Greenway, Jodi Bebb, Tom (Tonia) Derring, Kay Johnson, and Steve (Diane) Evans. He will also be missed by his grandchildren Jason (Jennifer)Lawless, Michelle (Mike) Raymond, Jessica Lawless, Heath (Emily) Johnson, Kristy (Brian) Halleck, Jenny Johnson, Gene (Tammy) Evans, Ryan (Stephanie) Boden, Lauren (Nathan) Lorenz, Clayton Evans, Amanda (Adam) Linard, Kory Funk, Krysta Funk, and Troy (Tiana) Derring, as well as his many great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jug’s name to the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 from 5 to 8pm, with a visitation a half-hour before the funeral service on December 19, 2024 at 10 am at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, Ohio.
