BRECKENRIDGE
Edward Lee "Duke" Breckenridge, 85, a lifelong resident of Grove City, Ohio, died Sunday morning February 18, 2007, in Edmond, Oklahoma attended by his family.
Duke is survived by his wife of 33 years, Rose Mary (Lombardo); sons Daniel, Stephen and John Breckenridge; daughters Jody Breckenridge, Sarah and Katrina Mansbridge; grandchildren Andrew and Destinie Mansbridge; Lauri and Adrienne Sellers; Courtney, Adam, Andrew and Samuel Breckenridge; and great-grandchildren Makayla Sellers and Vincent Parker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Lucy (McCollister) Breckenridge.
Duke was born January 7, 1922, on the family farm in Grove City, Ohio. He was well known for his exceptional skills in sports, both in high school and college where he was a star halfback and punt specialist. He served in the U.S. Marine corps during WWII and was stationed on Midway Islands from 1942 to 1944. Near the end of the war, he was sent to Oberlin College, Ohio, for OCS training. Duke graduated from Oberlin in 1949 and returned to Grove City. He established Breck's Market, which he sold in 1955 to begin his career in real estate sales. In 1960, he was elected to the Grove City City Council, where he was instrumental in guiding Grove City's growth. Duke and Rose Mary loved bowling and for the past 20 years worked together at Hillcrest Lanes in Columbus, where they have many friends.
Visitation will be held at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 3393 Broadway, Grove City from 5:00 – 8:00 pm on Friday, February 23, 2007. Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, February 24, 2007, 10:30 am at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3220 Columbus Street, Grove City with Pastor Donald Allman officiating. Interment will follow at Concord Cemetery.
