Eugene F. Tierney

September 26, 1930 — July 14, 2024

Worthington

Eugene (“Gene”) Francis Tierney, age 93, of Worthington, Ohio, entered eternal peace with God on July 14, 2024, at Dublin Methodist Hospital in Dublin, Ohio.

Gene is survived by his daughter Alison Mann of Powell, Ohio, grandchildren Brittany Boughey Manitakos and her husband Tyler of Boston MA, Andrew Boughey and his fiancée Ceciley Bigler of Barrington, Rhode Island, Ryan Mann and his wife Jenny of Springfield, Ohio, and Gene’s two year-old great grand-daughter, Maple Mann (daughter of Ryan and Jenny), who Gene adored and helped baby-sit twice a week. Also surviving Gene are his son-in-laws Gregory Boughey of Asheville, NC, Robert J. Mann of Powell Ohio, his sister-in-law Dorothy Palen of The Villages, FL, and nephew Mark Palen of Lake Tahoe, CA. Gene was preceded in death by his wife Cynthia, who passed away on August 5, 2022, and his daughter, Gwyn Boughey, (wife of Gregory), who passed away on June 1, 2022, following a five year battle with ALS. Gene was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law Scott Palen (husband of Dorothy), and his nephew David Palen (son of Dorothy and Scott).

Gene graduated from Buckley High School, Hartford, CT, and then attended the University of Connecticut for undergraduate and law school, graduating with a JD Degree. Gene joined the United States Air Force in 1957, where he served in the Judge Advocate’s Office in active duty, including being stationed in South Korea, and he later served in the USAF Reserves, retiring in 1990 after 33 years of dedication and service to his Country. Gene retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. In the private sector, Gene worked at Nationwide Insurance Company for decades as Senior Claims Counsel. Gene was active in every aspect of his life, and always selflessly dedicated his time to others. Gene served as President of the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys (“OACTA”), and as a Board Member, and received a Lifetime Achievement award from OACTA for his dedication and service to the organization and the legal profession. Gene was also a former President and long-time Board Member of the Eastham Part-time Resident Taxpayers Association (“EPTRA”) in Cape Cod, and a regular attendee, along with Cynthia, of luncheons by the Cape Cod Retired Military Officers Association.

Gene always loved Cape Cod, MA, spending his summers in retirement with Cynthia, where they did volunteer work for the Wellfleet Audobon Society for nearly twenty years, trimming bushes along walking trails, picking up trash along public roads, and maintaining flower islands that abutted intersections. Gene and Cynthia were also regular attendees of day trips with the Griswold Worthington Senior Center in Worthington, Ohio, a tradition Gene continued after Cynthia’s passing, meeting and making new friends every trip. Gene was an incredibly kind, generous, loving, selfless, and active person throughout his life, and he always saw the good in everyone. He believed that everyone was important, and everyone had an interesting life-story that was worth getting to know better, and that he was happy to sit down and chat with them about. He was a role model and inspiration for everyone who knew him, and he leaves a legacy of love in the lives of everyone he touched.

A burial service will be held for Gene at noon on July 31, 2024, at Cheshire Hillside Cemetery, 166 Wallingford Rd., Cheshire, CT, 06410. A Celebration of Life Service will also be held for Gene at All Saints Lutheran Church, Worthington, Ohio, at a future date later this Fall. Notice will be provided when the service is scheduled.
