Gary "Sam" Thomas Bennett, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away on September 26, 2024 at the age of 72. Born on August 25, 1952, in Galloway, Ohio, Sam carved a life filled with laughter, love, and memorable moments that will echo in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
Gary proudly worked for 36 years of his life with the company American Power (AEP), where he forged friendships and created a legacy of dedication that would inspire many. Yet, beyond his professional accomplishments, it was his family that brought him the greatest pride and joy. A loving husband to Marla Bennett for 41 years, their partnership was grounded in an unwavering devotion that many admired. His children—Stephenie Cardenaz, Melissa (Dusty) Stickel, Nikki Green, and Shawn (Kelly) Chapman—were the cornerstone of his happiness, and his grandsons were like best friends to him, sharing countless summers by the pool with Maw and Papa. The laughter and stories exchanged between them were like threads weaving a rich tapestry of cherished memories.
Gary’s life was punctuated with moments of joy that transcended ordinary experiences. His golf league met every Tuesday, where his infectious spirit radiated warmth and camaraderie, while Wednesday prayer groups allowed him to connect deeply with his faith—a pillar of his existence that he embraced wholeheartedly. Just over a year ago, he celebrated a personal milestone by getting baptized, a testament to his commitment to his beliefs and the values he instilled in his family.
Those who had the pleasure of being in Gary's presence understood his unique ability to light up any room. Described by his family as "the funniest man they ever met," he was the biggest jokester, thriving in the fun and laughter that he brought into every gathering. Selflessness marked his character; he was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. His charming disposition earned him the title of “the most popular man,” and he was the life of every party, leaving a trail of joyful memories in his wake.
Gary had a great love for his two dogs, Duke and Birdie, whose tails wagged in delight at any sign of his presence, mirroring the happiness he brought to the lives of others. He was a passionate baseball player and coach, continually nurturing the sportsmanship spirit in others, while also indulging in the thrill of gambling—a pastime he enjoyed.
Preceding him in death were his father, Vernon Bennett; mother, Donna Bennett; brother, Dave Bennett; and son-in-law, Jeff Green, who now welcome him with open arms into the eternal embrace of love.
Gary leaves behind a legacy enriched by the resilience and warmth of his family: his loving wife Marla, daughters Stephenie, Melissa, and Nikki, son Shawn, 14 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Also surviving him are his special aunts, lifelong friend Tim Castle, and many close relatives and friends whose lives he touched in innumerable ways.
As we reflect on the life of Gary "Sam" Bennett, we celebrate a man whose laughter will forever resonate in our hearts, whose kindness will inspire us to be better, and whose love will never be forgotten. In the words of Sam himself, life is meant for joy—let us honor him by continuing to spread that joy in the world he cherished so dearly.
