Gary Eugene Frey

Gary Eugene Frey, 90, of Westerville, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025. He was born in Steubenville, Ohio on June 6, 1934, to the late George and Annie (Linton) Frey. Gary married his beautiful wife, Marilyn J. Yates, on September 16, 1960.

Along with his loving wife of over 64 years, Gary is survived by his two sons, Curtis (Lisa) Frey and Douglas (Linda) Frey; daughter, Elizabeth (John) Lindberg; grandchildren, Tyler, Amanda (John) Davis, Ava, Anna, Evan, Rachel, Camille, and Caroline; great-grandchild, Rhett Davis; siblings, Lillian and Shirley; nieces and nephews; and many other family members and friends. Along with his parents, Gary is preceded in death by his sisters, Mildred, Alberta, Pricilla, Geraldine, Betty Jane; brothers, Roger, Grant, George, and Curtis; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Paula & Ron Eddy.

Gary graduated from Steubenville High School “Big Red,” and attended Pierce College, Los Angeles, California. He enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1957 to his honorable discharge in 1959. Gary returned to the States and worked with Wheeling Steel Corp in Steubenville, Ohio. Gary’s hard work, education, and service led him to his 30-year career working within the administration department with Rocketdyne, a division of Rockwell, Canoga Park, CA. After retiring from Rockwell, Gary was determined not to sit idle. Being industrious, and persevering in nature, he soon found himself working part-time for the following thirty years at Jack Maxton Chevrolet, Columbus, Ohio, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

To know Gary, was to love him. He was a man of honor and faith, who loved God, family, friends, and his country. He and Marilyn have attended Westerville Christian Church for 53 years. Gary served in many volunteer roles within the church and community; and was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need. Gary had a great sense of humor, and if you weren’t listening closely, you might have just missed one of his witty one-liners. He was the king of entertaining jokes, games, and tricks, along with conveying any historical or current events he had read up on.

In retirement, you could find Gary playing golf, Friday night card games, dining in/out with friends and family, gardening and tending to his immaculate flowers and lawn, documenting family lineage, reading or watching TV in his favorite chair, creating and constructing (e.g., furniture utilized in his home, remodeling, seasonal decorating), nature watching while relaxing on the porch, and traveling to many different destinations with his beloved Mare. Gary was an avid Buckeye fan, and he and Marilyn spent many Fall seasons attending Ohio State football games, along with going to several major bowl games.

Gary cherished his time spent with family and friends. He took great pride in sharing stories and pictures of his fond memories and life experiences. He will be greatly missed, and his love, laughter, and legacy will live on in our hearts forever.

Immediate family will greet friends and family from 10am-12pm, on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Westerville Christian Church, 471 E. College Street, Westerville, OH 43081, followed by a celebration of life at 12 Noon. Burial to follow at Blendon Central Cemetery.
