Gary D. McDonald, a retired sergeant with the Madison Township Police Department, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 25th, 2024, at the age of 71. He was surrounded by his devoted wife, children, and extended family. Born in the rolling hills of West Virginia, Gary was the son of the late Romie and Delores McDonald and the beloved brother of his late sister, Pam Miller (Son Milo), and living siblings Terri (husband Jeff Babbert), Tim (late wife Janet
McDonald), and Sherry (husband Kevin Duemmel).
His devotion and loyalty were also evident in his personal life. For over 52 years, Gary was the loving husband of Roxann McDonald, and together they raised three children: Brian C. McDonald (fiancée Tina Hall), Brandy R. McDonald (fiancée John Smith), and Andrea N. McDonald (boyfriend Mike Avonce). His grandchildren—Anilise, Tori (husband Brandon Lahn), Alexis, Faith (husband Devin Snyder), Brandon, Skyler, Zoey, Olivia, Gian, and great-grandchildren Ronan, Levi Richard, and Gwenevere—brought immense joy into his life. He was a cherished grandfather who loved spending time with each one of them. Gary held a special place in the hearts of his many nieces and nephews.
From a young age, he showed a strong sense of duty and honor, which led him to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After returning from his service, Gary proudly joined the ranks of the Madison Township Police Department, where he dedicated 33 years of his life to protecting and serving his community. Rising through the ranks to become a sergeant, he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues as well as the people he served alongside. Even after retiring, Gary continued to give back to his community as a Madison Township Trustee.
Gary's passion for serving others extended beyond his professional and personal life. He found solace in visiting his dear friends Wally and the late Bonnie Ooten at their cabin in the woods. There, he would sit on their front porch, sipping coffee and sharing stories. At home, he took great pride in displaying his collections of military memorabilia in what he affectionately called his "war room." In the town of Groveport, Ohio, lies the Motts Military Museum. Within this historic establishment stands a display dedicated to Gary himself. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Gary holds a deep love for this museum and the memories it houses. He takes great pride in supporting its mission and preserving the legacy of those who served alongside him. To him, Motts Military Museum is not just a place, but a symbol of honor, sacrifice, and bravery.
But above all, Gary's family and friends were his top priorities. He lived for them and was always there to provide support, guidance, and love. His honesty, loyalty, and generosity will forever be remembered by those who knew him. His legacy of selflessness and dedication to others will continue to inspire future generations. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
