George "Vernon" Stone, 91, Johnstown, OH passed away peacefully on December 4, 2013.
Vernon was born to John and Myrtle (Haynes) Stone on October 19, 1922 in Cottageville, WV and is preceded in death by his parents and 8 brothers.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 67 years, Doris (Walter) Stone; daughters, Carolyn (Thomas) Zeigler, Barbara (Justin) Krzyzanowski and Teri Horne; grandchildren; Jennifer (Antoine) Jackson, Jamie and Tyler Horne; 4 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many friends.
He served in the US Army during WW II and received the Bronze Star.
Vernon was the second oldest of 9 boys and he learned how to share a home with many others and he often opened his home to many relatives who needed a place to live for either a few weeks or several years. Father of 3, he also was the father figure in the lives of several other children.
Known as a prankster among his fellow railroaders, his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor delighted all.
Vernon was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to travel with family and friends.
Family and friends will gather on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, NE Chapel, 3047 East Dublin-Granville Road, Columbus, OH with the Funeral Service at 1:00 PM.
Interment will follow at Northlawn Memory Gardens.
