Giovanna Valenza

July 30, 1939 — May 23, 2021

Giovanna Valenza, 81, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at her bedside on May 23, 2021.

She was born in Introdacqua, Italy on July 30, 1939 to the late Pansilo and Aldovina (Spinosa) DiCesare.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband Serafino Valenza; and brother, Mario DiCesare
Surviving family includes daughter, Irene (Marvin) Emmons; grandson, Nicholis Emmons; and furry companion, Tina.

Giovanna DiCesare Valenza, lived in Introdacqua, Italy and was only 14 when she made her voyage to the United States although, her mother, Aldovina, never made her trip to the U.S.

Her father, Panfilo, worked on the Norfolk Railroad in Pennsylvania and Ohio, before retiring and returning back to Introdacqua and married Aldovina.

Before making the journey to the U.S., Giovanna was not too sure if she would like it in the new and unfamiliar place so Giovanna's brother made the trip six months prior to her.

Soon the day came that she would have to face her fears. On June 10th, 1954, she and her two cousins boarded the Conte Biancamano and sailed to the United States.

The journey lasted 12 days with a stop in Canada to rest. During those days she would practice her English in efforts to pass the citizenship test.

On June 24th, they saw Ellis Island and went through the immigration process. She then moved to Columbus, Ohio and lived with her aunt.

Giovanna, grew up at her aunts house, going to school to learn English, then working at the local paper company and also a factory where they built convertible tops.

She was a hard working woman, who learned how to balance life while raising a daughter single handedly.

Giovanna, soon went on to marry Serafino, and prosper as a loving mother, wife, grandmother, and friend.

Sweet wine, shopping for jewelry with Franco, cooking for holidays, and spending time with her friends and family especially cousins Pamfilia, sister Agnes, and sister-in-law Lena, were some of her fondest memories.

Giovanna, was a loving, sociable, kind hearted woman and will be sorely missed by all.
