Harriett K. Eakins

July 22, 1943 — March 19, 2025

Columbus

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Harriett K. Eakins on March 19th, 2025, at the age of 81. She was surrounded by her family and lots of love.

Harriett grew up in Fort Recovery, OH, where she developed a lifelong love for animals, especially dogs, that never faded throughout her life. She found tremendous happiness riding horses as a young girl, visiting the zoo with her family or students, watching her favorite Vet shows on TV, and caring for her many beloved pets over the years.

She was a loving wife, and an unwavering cheerleader for her daughters, who were her greatest pride. One of her biggest joys was being "Grandma" to her 3 grandchildren; the adoration and love she had for them was unparalleled. Harriett was well known as a "shopping enthusiast" and enjoyed nothing more than spoiling her family.

A widely renowned special needs teacher, Harriett touched the lives of many students with her extraordinary patience, kindness, strength, and dedication. She gave her heart to every child, making them feel seen and valued. Her impact as an educator will be felt for years to come, as she empowered countless children to overcome obstacles and thrive.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 and a half years, Alan Eakins; parents, Gretchen and Alvin Kolp; and sister, Susan Kolp. Harriett is survived by daughters, Gretchen (Chris Bullis) Eakins and Amanda (James Kinder) Eakins; grandchildren, Aiden, Oliver, and Madison Kinder; brother, Alvin Kolp; nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Jodi, Adam, and Joseph

Harriett’s legacy of love, determination, and selflessness will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues, and the many students whose lives she changed. She will be missed more than words can express.
