Hesterie (Hester) Mathis Shaw was born on September 4, 1941, in Thomasville, Georgia to Will and Rosalee Mathis.
Hester graduated from Douglas High School, and shortly after had a son Anthony Mathis. Hester lived in Thomasville until 1965 when she moved to Brooklyn, New York to raise her son Vincent Mathis. In NY she met John B Shaw in Manhattan, and from that day forth they were inseparable. From that union they had three children (Bernetha "Nita", Devern "Dee-Dee", and Ronald); later in 1975 they adopted their beautiful baby Latarsha Kelsor at six days old.
While in New York Hester worked for Tabernacle Day Care Center as a teacher's assistant and because she loved children so much, she attended Medgar Everett College for Early Childhood Development. Although diagnosed with polio and epilepsy at the age of 3, she never let that deter her from doing anything she wanted to do. She was the most giving and loving person that would ever cross your path.
To meet Hester is to know Hester a real diamond in the rough. Hester leaves behind to meet again in one day her loving family daughters Nita (Columbus, OH), Dee-Dee (Raleigh, NC), sons Anthony (Thomasville, GA), and Ronald (Donna) of Columbus, OH. Her sisters Rosa Rhodes, Fannie Rhodes, Betty Campbell, and brother Winfred Byron. 20 Grandchildren, 24 Great-Grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
