Iva G. Herman

November 28, 1935 — March 29, 2024

Iva G. Herman passed away peacefully on March 29, 2024, in her home in Grove City, Ohio. She was born on November 28, 1935, to Hughie Wallace and Ocie May Asbury Britton in Charleston, West Virgina. She graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1973. Iva married Dean Herman on February 25, 1956, at Jefferson First Baptist Church.

Dean and Iva owned and operated the Jefferson Clothesline Laundry. Iva had an alterations business for eighteen years. Besides operating the two businesses, Iva enjoyed giving back to her community. She was a member of Jefferson Grange, the Jefferson Garden Club, the National Garden Club, the Fire Jets, volunteered as an EMT for the Jefferson Fire Dept., and the Jefferson Squares Dance Club.

Iva loved to sew and quilt. Iva along with her sister Wanda made 25 "Quilts of Valor" and gave them to veterans and surviving family members. She belonged to the Jefferson Quilting Club and the Ashtabula Sew What Quilting Group where she and fellow members made and donated quilts to Harbor Lights Hospice, the Cancer Relay Team, and the Ashtabula Lighthouse Restoration Society. They also made and donated quilts, teddy bears, baby hats and other items to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, the Help Me Grow Program in Ashtabula, Ashtabula County Medical Center Nursery, Ashtabula Children's Services and the Alzheimer's Unit of Ashtabula County Nursing Home. In Grove City, she belonged to Stitching Sisters where they made lap quilts for The James Cancer Hospital. She enjoyed teaching and sewing for her girls, her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Iva supported her family and friends in all their various activities throughout their lives. She never missed a chance to encourage or send a card to those who she loved. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They spent many hours boating on Lake Erie and many other family events. She also loved dancing, music, doing crafts with her grandchildren and working in her flower gardens.

Iva is survived by her two daughters, Teresa (Mitch) Burton of Fuquay-Varina, N.C. and Lori (late Richard) Kidwell of Grove City, OH. She is survived by her grandson Adam (Jessica) Kidwell of Hardeeville, S.C., granddaughters Deana (John) Schlax of Durham, N.C., Jennifer Kidwell of Grove City, OH., and Christi Burnett of Fuquay-Varina, N.C. She is survived by fourteen great-grandchildren: Harper, Eli and Brooks Kidwell, Silas, Evalyn, Kaila, Stella, Titus and Ruth Schlax, Jon and Bryan Martinez, Michael, Mia and Avery Burnett. Sister Wanda Mackey and brothers Leushin (Lorraine) Britton and David (Rosalie) Britton.

Iva is preceded by her parents Hughie and May Britton, in-laws Elmer and Ida Herman, sister Sylvia Reid and brothers Ural, Robert, Donald Ray, Hancel, Jack, Arlie Norman Britton and brother-in -law and sister-in-law Neil and Ella Mae Herman

A celebration of life open house will be held on May 18, 2024 at Kellys Creek Independent Baptist Church, 6221 Kelly's Creek Road, Charleston, WV 25412, from noon to 2:30 pm. She will be buried at the Britton family cemetery.
