Delaware

Joan Elizabeth (Hoffman) Shoults, 67, of Delaware, OH, passed away February 15, 2025, at home. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.

Joan was born on October 4, 1957, in Washington, DC, to Rosemary (Dougherty) Saghy and Richard Hoffman, both originally from Canton, OH. Joan grew up in Akron, OH, and graduated from Firestone High School and Allegheny College. She was a very good student, vocalist and swimmer. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Akron. Her favorite early memories included summer family beach vacations to Stone Harbor, NJ, attending frequent family gatherings with cousins, and developing her lifelong love of animals.

Joan was known for her work as a paralegal, assisting people during some of their most difficult times. She was a professional and showed true concern for the people she helped. Joan worked at several law firms and with many law partners for over thirty years and was highly respected by her colleagues and clients.

In 2006, Joan married Benny Shoults with a beach wedding in the Outer Banks, NC. Together they cherished their many years involving the activities and celebrations of their families. Joan will join her parents in heaven along with her older son, Christopher Wasson. She is survived by her husband Benny Shoults; her son Andrew (Jess) Wasson of Worthington, OH; her stepson Justin Shoults of Boston, MA; her brother David (Kristin) Hoffman of Vienna, VA; sister-in-law Bonnie (Sid) Townsend of Columbus, OH; and brother-in-law Gary (Claudia) Shoults of Mt. Sterling, OH; as well as many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, and other relatives.

Joan was actively involved in various neighborhood organizations and events in Delaware. She had a passion for crafts, artwork, and decorating. Her colorful spirit and creative talent helped Joan develop perfect gifts for family and friends, involving reflection, preparation, and perfect presentation. Her gifts are memorials to her life so well lived with others.

A celebration of life will be held at The Barn at Stratford, in Delaware, OH, May 3rd from 1-4pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Humane Society of Delaware County (https://hsdcohio.org) in Joan’s honor.
