Joanne Jeanice Bettin, age 90, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2022, at StoryPoint in Grove City, Ohio. She was born on December 8, 1931, the youngest of 6 children, to Leo and Dora Whaley in Spirit Lake, Iowa. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school through 8th grade, and graduated from Spirit Lake High School. She then attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, majoring in Elementary Education. She taught kindergarten for 2 years in Storm Lake, Iowa, before moving to Columbus, Ohio in 1954 with her husband Wayne Bettin, for his job at North American Rockwell.
Joanne was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and was loved dearly by her family. She was kind and caring, and always looked for the best in people. Her warm smile and bubbly personality welcomed everyone. She enjoyed baking, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. She shared her love for Jesus with the little children, teaching the preschool Sunday school class for over 40 years at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Columbus, Ohio, where she was a member since moving to Columbus.
Joanne is survived by her husband of 68 years, Wayne Bettin; her children Ron (Kathy) Bettin, Dawn (Carl) Scheiderer, Jay (Debbie) Bettin, and Jana (Joe) Braughton; grandchildren Ben (Dr. Carrie) Bettin, Dr. Clayton (Dr. Kristen) Bettin, Megan (Kirby) Ayers, Kara (Jason) Pollo, Brooke (Ryan) Rausch, Jonathan (Amanda) Bettin, Austin (Brittany) Bettin, Lauren (William) Stump, Caleb (Ashley) Braughton, Joran (Allie) Braughton, and Hannah (Spenser) Foley; great-grandchildren Alyssa, Sawyer, Silas, and Aria Bettin, Henley, Mila, and Kyler Ayers, Peyton and Ava Pollo, Clara and Audrey Bettin, Owen, Addie, and Emma Bettin, William, Lincoln, and Lilly Stump, Thatcher Braughton, Josiah, Titus, and Liza Braughton; and Joanne's sister Evaline Calhoun. She was preceded in death by her parents Leo and Dora Whaley; her brothers Howard (Anna) Whaley, Gerald Whaley, and sisters Genevieve (Elmer) Dodt, and Orpal (Ray) Hillary.
The funeral service will be held on February 11 at 12:00 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church at 766 S. High Street, Columbus, OH. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 to 11:45 a.m. prior to the service.
