John Thomas Beatty

February 16, 1949 — June 19, 2024

John Thomas Beatty was born February 16, 1949, in Columbus, Ohio, to Oliver James and Norma Jean (Thompson) Beatty. He graduated from Thomas Worthington High School in 1968.

John was married to Martha (Baasch) on August 17, 1990, at the old St. John A.M.E. Church on Plymouth St. and they were together for over 44 years. He also participated in raising and supporting three wonderful sons from the moment they came into his life in 1981.

John retired from Liebert Corporation as a Maintenance Mechanic after 37 years of service. 

John was a faithful member of St. John A.M.E. Church all his life. He sang in the church choir, served as a member of the Trustee and Usher board, security team, and Men’s Ministry. He traveled to many of the men’s fishing trips and was an active member on the Fish Fry Committee and the St. John A.M.E. Church Foundation. John also faithfully worked on repair issues around the church when called upon.

Since early 1980, John was also very active in the lives of his AA family and sponsored several men throughout his 44 years of sobriety. 

John was passionate about his Ohio State Buckeyes - Basketball & Football, an avid Cleveland Browns Football fan and a Cincinnati Reds Baseball fan. John liked to golf and ride his 10-speed bike. He also had a strong love for music and even took piano lessons during his years of retirement.

John departed this life on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, and was preceded in death by his parents, Norma and Oliver Beatty, brother, Forest Beatty and sister, Juanita Manogaran, Brother-in-Law Alan (Dee) Baasch, Nieces: Valerie Freeland and April Young. Grandparents: Forest (Pops) and Ada Thompson, and Aunt Carrie Nelle Thompson.

John will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Marty Beatty, children: Scott (Richel) Weyand, TJ (Katie) Weyand, Chad Weyand, and Tricia Flinn. Grandchildren: Brendon Weyand, Sabina Snowden, Emily (Anthony) Watson, Makayla Dillon, Jordan Ramos,  Amy Weyand, Bailey Weyand, and Abbie Weyand. Great-grandchildren: Liam Yocum and Desmond Weyand. Brother: Oliver Beatty, Sister: Ada Stragand, Sister-in-Law: Mary Jo Tuller, Brother-in-Law Ted Baasch. Nieces: Hope Laney, Angela (Max) Jones, Sonya Freeland and Nephew Jason Freeland. Great Nieces and Nephews: Kastaisja (Cameron) Harper-Peterson, Khari Gorley, Sergio Freeland, Breleigh Stragand, Sadaryn Jackson, William Terry, Camryn Stragand, Lorenzo Loyd, Unique (Dewan) Martin, Xzavier Littleberry, Dominique Littleberry. Cousins: Reverend Aubrey Jackson (Jannie), Dr. Kelly Jackson (Fang), Dr. Carl Jackson (Sharon) and many other loving cousins, family, and friends.

John’s gentle soul and loving kindness will live on in the lives of all the people he touched.

A visitation will be held on Friday, June 28, from 10:00am to 11:30am at St. John A.M.E. Church - 7700 Crosswoods Dr, Columbus, OH 43235. A funeral service will immediately follow.
