John Jerry Saunders Sr., 88, of Columbus, passed away Friday, August 17, 2007 at Mount Carmel East Hospital. He was born January 5, 1919, in Bluefield, VA, son of the late John Henry and Susie Ann Palmer Saunders. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Benjamin Saunders, David Phineas Saunders and Daniel Brooks Saunders; sisters, Veda Lanora Smith, Irene Saunders and Priscilla McWatters. John served in the Army during WWII and was also a graduate of North Carolina A & T College. He married Marie Holly in 1954. John was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and also the superintendant of Sunday School for 11 years. In addition to this, he was a trustee for the Credit Union. John is survived by a son, John Jerry Saunders Jr. of Columbus; brother, Herbert Hoover Saunders of Cleveland; sisters, Roberta Mays of Shreveport, LA, Nannie Paige of Philadelphia, PA and Erva Saunders of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Tiffany, Leeander, Jerrica and Jerrime Saunders and a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be Monday, August 27, 2007 at 10:00 AM at Unity Church of Christianity, 4211 Maize Rd. Columbus, with Sheila and Zirl Smith, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Newcomer Funeral Home N.E. Chapel, 3047 E. Dublin-Granville Road, Columbus.
