John L Key was born on May 2, 1938, in Rossville, Tennessee to parents Willie and Juanita Key.
He relocated to Gary, Indiana at a young age where he later attended Roosevelt High School. He enlisted in the Air Force and was active during the Korean War. He was a recipient of several Military Honors during his 4 years of service.
Upon returning to Gary, he worked at Gary Tube Works- US Steel until his retirement. He then worked part-time for Sears, specializing in heating and cooling repairs for several years. After leaving this employment, he continued to use his knowledge often doing home repairs for anyone in need. He was a car aficionado and extremely gifted at working on cars. He could build a house from the ground up and practically did so when remodeling one of his homes. In addition to fixing things and helping others, he loved to travel, hunt, fish and spend time with family and friends. His intelligence, ingenuity and compassion were displayed by his quick-witted sense of humor, ability to build anything and love for God and his family.
While living in Gary, John was a faithful member of True Faith Church where he served as a deacon until he relocated to Columbus Ohio. He was an active member at Unity Baptist Church in Columbus Ohio until God called him home on the morning of October 6, 2023.
He was preceded in death by his parents Willie and Juanita Key; sister, Willette Gordon; daughter, Vivian Key.
He leaves to cherish his loving memories: sister, Dorothy Key; children: Kevin(Fabi) Key of Friendly, MD [m. Joan], Sheldon(Felicia) of Memphis, TN, Janell Key of Gary, IN and Sharlynn (Lynn) Key of Columbus, OH [m. Charlene]; grandchildren: Tasha(Marcus) Gill, Aaron Key, Vanessa Lee, Roslynn Lee, Kevin Key Jr., Jasmine (Dorian) Key-Rhea, Brandon Key, Jalisa Key, and Victoria Key; 11 great-grandchildren, cherished friend Denise Hale, beloved pet Koco, and a host of other relatives and friends.
