John D. Slavey, of Columbus, Ohio, died on April 11, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. Surviving are his loving wife of 30+ years, Ruth Carrol, and his step-son Gary (JoAnn) Cales and granddaughter Melissa Cales. John was preceded in death by his parents John and Rilly M. Slavey.
John is also survived by brothers Robert (Martha) Slavey of Fayetteville, NC, and Stan (Sandi) Slavey of Princeton, WV, and one sister Mandy Sullivan of Tampa, Florida. Additionally, John leaves one sister-in-law Sue DeCubellis of Florida and a maternal aunt, Mildred Lewis, of Ohio.
Loved by many, John is also survived by many nieces and nephews. These include Martha (Mark) Sheeder, Elizabeth (Ryan) Simmons, Bruce (Karen) Sullivan, John R. (Kristine) Sullivan, Nicole (Jeremy) Clark, J.Tyler (Megan) Slavey, Stanley R. (Sierra) Slavey, Rebecca DeCubellis, Dan (Diane) DeCubellis, Philip (Annie) DeCubellis, Sam (Alice) DeCubellis, Sherry (Bob) Mills, Mike (Debbie) Stanley, and Chris (Tamma) Stanley. Surviving great nephews include Michael (Summer) Sheeder, Matthew Sheeder, Logan Simmons, Jackson Slavey, and Miles Slavey, and a great-grand niece Savannah Sheeder. Numerous other great nieces and great nephews survive John from the Stanley, Mills, and DeCubellis families.
An active member of the Trinity Assembly of God, John served as an usher and deacon. He voluntarily gave service to all aspects of the church's maintenance with his dear friends Jim and Bill. Additionally, John assisted with the church's monthly food distribution, as overall he donated hundreds of hours to his beloved church and church family.
A veteran, John served honorably with the 82nd Airborne Division. Also, throughout his course of employment, he worked in the trucking industry and retired from the Ohio BMV.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Trinity Assembly of God, 1112 Demorest Rd., Columbus, OH 43204, on Saturday, April 30, 2016, at 2 p.m., as conducted by Pastor Ken Keene. Cremation services were provided by Newcomer Funeral Home and Crematory of Grove City.
