John R. Stone, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on February 17, 2023, at the age of 78. He was born on September 29, 1944, to Charles C. and Betty E. Stone in Columbus, Ohio.
John enlisted in the United States Navy in February 1964, and he served on the USS Barry (DD-933) as a Radio Operator during the Vietnam War. For his service, he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, among other commendations.
Following his military service, John spent most of his life working as an electrician, where he developed a reputation for his hard work and attention to detail. He took pride in his work, and his dedication earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and clients.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, John celebrated many personal victories, including 37 years of sobriety. He was a beloved member of the recovery community, where he served as a mentor and friend to countless individuals struggling with alcoholism.
John was a loving and devoted husband, who was preceded in death by his wives, Barbara A. Stone and Regina A. Stalter-Stone. He cherished his time with them and was deeply devoted to his family.
John is survived by his children, Kristina (Tim) Valis and Charles Stone; his significant other, Vickie Lynn Hazlett; his sister, Judy (Bill) Stilwell; his grandchildren, Timothy (Marion) Valis, Johnathon Valis, William (Syrina) Valis, Anastasia (Corey) Snell, and Nicholas (Megan) Stalter; his stepson, Tracey "Allan" (Nancy) Stalter; Stephanie Hazlett; and many other family members and friends.
John will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and his unwavering commitment to helping others. He was a man of great character and integrity, who always put the needs of others before his own. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the recovery community, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace.
