Jordan G. Kareklas, 86 of Columbus, passed away at The Kobacker House on July 19, 2015.
Born on September 16, 1928 to the late George and Stamatia (Zografos) Kareklas in Rhodes, Greece, immigrated to the United States in 1948, where he first met his father and settled in Farrell, PA. Served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a Medic in Korea and also Hokkaido, Japan. Moved to Columbus in 1959 where he worked as a computer operator for North American Aviation.
For 31 years worked at The Ohio State University as a systems analyst for the Research Foundation. With a passion for soccer, he served as a coach and player for the Greek Olympic soccer team and was instrumental in introducing the sport to Ohio High Schools. He served as a rules interpreter for over 20 years and brought the joy and discipline of soccer to countless boys, girls, men, and women through league, church, high school, college, recreation games, and more. In 1996, Jordan received the first national high school officials award for soccer, and in 2011 was also the first soccer official to be inducted into the Ohio High School Officials Hall of Fame.
Survived by wife of 62 years Victoria Kareklas, children George, Luke, Keriake and extended family. Preceded in death by father and mother-in-law, Loukas and Kyriake, daughter-in-law, Brenda.
Friends may call at Newcomer Funeral Home, NE Chapel, 3047 E. Dublin Granville Rd., on Thursday, July 23, 2015 from 4pm to 8pm. Funeral service at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 N. High St., Columbus on Friday at 10am.
