SMITH

Joseph Alexander "Smitty" Smith, Captain, USAR (Ret.), died peacefully August 13, 2011 at Kobacker House in Columbus OH with his wife Cheryl and son Jarrett at his side. He fought a short, courageous battle against Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Born February 23, 1952 in Jamaica, West Indies, he died at the young age of 59. He lived, loved and worked very hard. Smitty was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne and Special Forces and retired after 21 years of active duty and reserves. He was a carhauler for Cassens Transport Company for more than 15 years and a member of Teamsters Local 957. Smitty was a licensed pilot, an accomplishment he earned while stationed in Germany in the early 1970's. Preceded in death by mother Mary Teresa Smith Coleman, step-father Oscar Coleman, brothers Guy Coleman and Richard Chisholm and Rover. He is survived by his extremely proud and loving wife, Cheryl. They were married August 21, 1992. They had an unconditional love for each other stronger than life itself, and had looked forward to retirement and riding into the sunset together. Also surviving are his children Joseph, Jr., Jason, Jarrett, Evadne, and Cheannette, sisters Felecia and Esther, brother Wayne, father Edwin (Madlyn), Skipper and many other family, friends and co-workers. His smile lit up a room; his heart was made of gold. You only meet one Smitty in a lifetime. Enjoy the memories; he created many for those he knew and loved. His family, home and friends were everything to him. Smitty will be cremated and will take his 137th Airborne jump with full military honors during a memorial celebration to be held on Sunday September 25, 2011 at The Community Men's Club in Commercial Point OH (next to Scioto Elementary School) beginning at 11:00 am. Casual attire is requested; memories are required. Newcomer Funeral Home, SW Chapel was honored to serve the Smith family.
