Matheney
After 97 years of shining bright for family and friends, the great light of our lives has finally faded. June Matheney gave as much love as anyone could hope for and asked little in return. (Except maybe to change the time on her VCR, which she never once used.)
June was one of nine children born to Everett and Belva Karr and came of age in the village of Crooksville—the Los Angeles of Perry County, Ohio.
June was widely considered both a pool and card shark in her day. Many a deep sigh has been released on account of her working of the eight ball or prowess around the Euchre table. She and her late husband, Fred, played cards every Friday and Saturday night until his death in 1967. After that, she continued to break the hearts of her opponents but without her greatest partner (and fiercest competitor) at her side. Fred was a military man and construction worker and by all accounts adored her every move. After his death, she seldom spoke a word of their great love. And she never went on a date or, as far as anyone knew, even stole a single glance at another man.
If she was known for anything beyond her kindness and tenacity it was her baking. Her cookies, breads and pies were savored by family, friends, neighbors, friends of friends, family's coworkers, strangers at bake sales and probably just a good portion of central Ohio. Baking was one of the ways she showed her love and one of the things that kept her going long after her frail fingers should have forgotten their old ways.
But it was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the youngest of which was born only 9 months ago, that kept her hanging on to every minute of life she could fight for. They were the topic of nearly every conversation, and she fretted about their well-being to her very last day. And although she was always reluctant to bother them with a favor to ask, she never hesitated to share a brazen opinion if she had one to give.
June was stubborn, independent and sharp as a tack until the very end. According to her wishes, you will not find an open casket at her service—mainly because she would never trust anyone else to do her hair or makeup.
Our sweet angel, your long life is finally over. Now it's time for you to rest and for us to pick ourselves up and try to continue where you left off. Oceans of love.
