Kym Ly Hackenberger, age 66, passed away at home Saturday, November 6th, 2021, surrounded by family and friends. She was born on June 19th, 1955 in Columbus, OH, to Carl "Gene" and Ardith Dozer.
Kym was a graduate of Walnut Ridge High School, and achieved a Bachelor of Arts in English from Capital University. Her first job was as a "Whopper Slopper" at a local Burger King. During college she worked retail at Lazarus. She went on to have a long and distinguished career in insurance as an underwriter, and then in product development and management. She enjoyed her career, but the work she loved was writing. Kym wrote a lot on her own, but her writing took off when she formed a partnership with Melody Lowe. The two have published multiple books and registered several screenplays and scripts. Their books Dark Destiny and its sequel Rise of the Dark King are available on Amazon.
Kym enjoyed great writing and entertainment, often found with her nose in a book. She loved singing and music, especially John Denver whom she never missed an opportunity to see live, and Queen. Some of her favorite past times include getting lost in great stories told through TV shows or movies and cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes. Kym believed all these things were better when surrounded by family, friends, and animals.
Kym was as fierce an advocate for animals as you'll ever find. She worked for years with local dog groups to support shelters, rescues, the Dublin Pet Fair, and even pass legislation such as Nitro's Law enacted in 2013. Kym loved her own pets as children, and while preceded in death by many, is survived by dogs Layla and Marley.
Surviving family includes husband of 42 years Larry Hackenberger; children Bryan (Dianne Brown) Hackenberger and Laura (William "Ben") Foley; 7 grandchildren including Timothy Madary, McKaylah Madary, Matthew Brown, Wesley Hackenberger, Gwendolynne Hackenberger, Abigail Foley, and William Foley; sister Jyl (Jack) Barber, sister-in-law Mary Ann Dozer, and sister-in-law Kathy (Bill) Barnhill; as well as many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Kym is preceded in death by her parents Carl "Gene" and Ardith Dozer; son Jeffrey Hackenberger; brother Gary Dozer and brother-in-law Don Barber; and dogs Sammy, Brownie, Freckles, Jake, Oscar, Neesa, Buddy, Chloe, and Ernie.
Visitation will be held Monday, November 15th, 2021, from 10:00am ET until 12:00pm ET at Newcomer Funerals, Grove City, OH, 3393 Broadway (US Highway 62).
Funeral service will immediately follow at the same location at 12:00pm ET, followed by interment at Glen Rest Memorial Estate, Reynoldsburg, OH.
In lieu of flowers Kym asked that friends and family make donations to animal causes:
