Lawrence Robert Underwood ("Bob"), 85, passed away peacefully on June 24th, 2023 at The Ohio State University Hospital while surrounded by family.
Bob was born on July 12, 1937 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Mariam Skeels and Frank Underwood. He will be remembered by his sister Patricia Hageman, his daughter Lynn-Marie (Alan), his nephews Kenneth (Lisa), Brian (Sabrina), his grand-children Victoria, Alex, and Josie, and numerous grand-nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Mariam and Frank, and his grand-children Michael Frizzell and Mark Marcum, Jr.
At the age of 18, Bob enlisted in the Ohio National Guard, and he trained and served with the 166th Regimental Combat Team. After his honorable discharge from the National Guard in 1958, Bob joined the Army Reserve, and he served until his honorable discharge in 1963 at the rank of Specialist SP4.
Bob went on to build his career at the Kroger Bakery in Columbus, working there for over 30 years until his retirement. Since Bob was never one to stay idle, he took multiple part-time jobs after retirement at ABM Janitorial Services, Thorsen's Greenhouse, AmVets, and multiple Goodwill locations in the Delaware and Lewis Center Ohio areas. Bob moved to the Lewis Center area in the 1970s in a neighborhood that was originally owned by his family, and he remained there until his passing.
One of Bob's passions in his life was vintage cars and auto racing – earlier in his life he owned several "muscle" cars which he enjoyed driving and working on, and he would frequently attend car shows with his daughter Lynn-Marie and later with his grand-children. He was also an avid follower of the NASCAR circuits, and he thoroughly enjoyed his Sundays watching racing on television. He often talked about early days when he would frequent the race tracks to watch live races as well.
Bob was often described as having a "heart of gold", and he would go out of his way to help his friends and family members whenever it was needed. He would always make time to spend with his family, and he greatly enjoyed and would rarely miss family get-togethers for holidays and special occasions. Bob was a true family man - his love and tenderness has touched many in his life, and he will truly be missed by those that love him so much.
