Lawrence ("Ski") Mathew Zalipski, 89, of Mt. Sterling, Ohio passed away on February 8, 2024. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on September 15,1934 to John and Elsie (Rust) Zalipski.
Ski grew up in Columbus and entered the Marines in 1952 and after completing basic training at Camp Pendleton, shipped off to Korea where he served his country as a Private First Class. Ski drove heavy trucks in Korea, even once driving Debbie Reynolds to an USO event and she received his dog tags in return.
After leaving the Marines in 1955 he was introduced by a family friend to Mavis "Rene" Lorene Davis, a beautiful girl from Arley, Alabama and they were married on December 24,1955 in a double ceremony with his childhood friend Homer Willoughby and Rene's friend and roommate Norma Ebert. The four celebrated their 50th Anniversary in a joint celebration with family and friends in 2005.
In September of 1970, Ski and Rene moved to Mt. Sterling on the banks of Deer Creek with their four children. Ski lived there 53 years.
Ski was hired in 1955 at Westinghouse in Columbus and worked there for 28 years, serving as a union steward for several years until Westinghouse closed its doors in the early 1980's. After that he went on to work for Walker Construction driving heavy equipment until he retired.
Ski raced thoroughbred horses from the late 1960's to mid-1980's and had 18 career wins. He enjoyed being outdoors - whether fishing, boating/waterskiing, hunting, tennis, or just mowing the yard and then laying out in the hammock for a nap.
Ski's favorite past-time was golfing - achieving a Hole-In-One four times - the last one occurring after open heart surgery and after his VA doctor told him he'd never golf again. In the 1960's he won the Father Pete Open three times, once beating PGA Pro Tom Weiskopf. He golfed with Ohio State Buckeye Football player Vic Janowicz on several occasions and also had the privilege of golfing with LPA Pros Althea Gibson, Kathy Whitworth and Carol Mann. You could typically find him on golf courses around the area or around the country with his sons, brothers and many friends from Mt. Sterling too numerous to mention. The last several years his constant golfing companions were Dan, Charlie and Bobby, but we can't forget Larry and Chuck and others who are sadly no longer with us. And we can't forget all the boys who golfed in Luray, Virginia at the Attababy Tournaments (Jim, Scott, and many others) hosted by son Mike.
Everyone who knew him, knew he was an avid Ohio State Buckeye Football fan, so the family will be wearing their favorite OSU apparel in honor of Ski and invite anyone attending the funeral or Celebration of Life at the American Legion, where Ski was a member for many years, in Mt. Sterling afterwards to do the same.
Ski is preceded in death by his wife Mavis Lorene (Davis) Zalipski, parents John and Elsie Zalipski, brother Joseph Zalipski, sister Mary (Zalipski) Wilson and great-granddaughter Tatum Clark.
He leaves behind sons Jimmy (Sandy) and Mike (Janeena) and daughters Sonia and Cathy; grandchildren/great-grandchildren; Sarah Brown, Jayden Myers, Samantha Brown, Courtney Reay, Jack Novak, Larry Reay, Joshua Zalipski, Ethan Zalipski, Shawn McKenzie, Kyle McKenzie and Kody McKenzie; brothers John M. Zalipski and David H. Zalipski, many nieces and nephews, and beloved canine companion Daisy.
The family would also like to especially thank Dan, Charlie, Bobby for being such faithful friends to dad for so many years, and also our girl Cheryl. We also want to thank Promedica Hospice and Visiting Angels for taking such great care for him. If we missed anyone, please know that your friendship to our dad meant the world to him and to us.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at Pleasant Cemetery, Mt. Sterling, on February 19, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. After the funeral, the family is hosting a Celebration of Life with a carry-in potluck meal at the American Legion in Mt. Sterling. Please bring a covered dish if you can.
Pastor David Sells of First Baptist Church Ashville will be officiating. Funeral services provided by Newcomer Funeral Home, Grove City, Ohio.
