Lloyd Horrocks

HORROCKS Dr. Lloyd A. Horrocks, age 75, died unexpectedly at The Ohio State
University Hospital on Saturday morning, August 18, 2007. Professor Horrocks was
born in Cincinnati, Ohio and grew up in MI and IL the son of a YMCA administrator. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1953 (BA in Chemistry) before earning a PhD (1960) in Physiological Chemistry from The Ohio State University. He served as a project Engineer (1/ Lt, USAF) from 1955-1958. He worked as a Research Associate at the Cleveland Psychiatric Institute from 1960-1968 before joining the department of Physiological Chemistry (now Molecular Cellular Biochemistry) at The Ohio State University as an Assistant Professor in 1968. Promoted to full Professor in 1973, and retiring in 1992, he served as Professor emeritus in the department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. He is best known for his research on plasmalogen metabolism
and phospholipases A2 in brain. He authored over 350 research publications, edited 7 books, and wrote 2 monographs. He was the Editor-in-chief of neurochemical Pathology (J. Molecular Neuroscience) and co-organizer of the Satellite Symposium of International Society Neurochemistry, He served on numerous editorial advisory boards (J. Neurochemistry, J. Lipid Research, Lipids, and Neurochemical Research), grant review panels, and mentored many graduate students and post-doctoral colleagues. Dr. Horrocks is survived by his wife, Marjorie of 51 years, son, Richard, daughter, Becky and grandchildren, William, Aaron and Valerie Haxe, Ian and Ashley Horrocks, great-grandson
Zachary Haxe-Evans, and sisters, Alice (Howard) White and Lois (Loren)
Fulton. Dr. Horrocks was dedicated to his family and the field of scientific research and writings. He was a gentleman who was liked by his friends, students and colleagues. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at King Avenue UMC located on the corner of King and Neil Avenue. A reception will follow immediately.
