Lonny Gene Shippy, 86, of Powell, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2022 in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by loved ones.
Lonny was born May 22, 1936 in Kendallville, Indiana. He graduated from LaGrange High School and the University of Cincinnati. He married his late wife of 60 years, Cleta Faye (Gibbs) Shippy, in 1956 and was a resident of Elyria from 1975 until moving to Powell in 2017. Lonny's 43-year career as a civil engineer and public servant made a lasting impact in people's daily lives. His early career as a consultant and City of Cincinnati traffic engineer contributed to the development of safer roadways and the interstate highway system. His most memorable project was his 1969 trip to Central Africa to study transportation needs. Before retiring as the Elyria City Engineer in 1998, Lonny was instrumental in the design and construction of Elyria's police station, wastewater plant expansion, and Washington Avenue Bridge replacement. Lonny continued to serve his community in retirement on the Elyria Public Library System Board of Trustees. Lonny held a respectful faith in God and was blessed with integrity and a positive outlook. A devoted husband and father, he enjoyed storytelling, games, bicycling, golf, genealogy, computer programming, painting, and spending time with friends.
He is survived by his children Steven (Kathy) Shippy, Linda (Gary dec.) Brown, Edward (Debbie dec.) Shippy, Julie (Trevor) McGill, and Amy (Michael) Lewis; grandchildren Jennifer Young, Tyler Garrison, Cassidy Anderson, Victoria Martin, Calida Brown, Ian McGill, Ava McGill, Abigail Lewis, and Jack Lewis; seven great grandchildren; brother Richard Shippy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and granddaughter Tamara Zalud.
Friends will be received Friday, October 28th, 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Newcomer Northwest Chapel, Powell, Ohio where a service will follow at 4:00 pm. Burial will follow on Saturday, October 29th, 2:00 pm in Lewis Center, Ohio. The family extends their appreciation to beloved friend Linda Hostetler, the Neuro Critical Care Unit of Riverside Methodist Hospital, and SourcePoint of Delaware County.
