Manojit Sukul passed away on July 3, 2023 at the age of 75. He was born on July 19, 1947 to the late Fakir Chandra and Ashalata Sukul. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Manojit was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was born in the village of Garbeta in West Bengal, India and grew up in Kolkata. When Manojit was thirteen, his mother fell ill. Manojit then helped raise his younger sister and brother. Manojit graduated from Bengal Engineering College in 1968. He regarded these college years as some of the best years of his life where he made lifelong friends. In January 1971, Manojit arrived in New York city to pursue The American Dream. With merely a few dollars in his pocket and the support of his friends, Manojit worked odd jobs while trying to find work as an engineer and complete his Master's degree. Manojit graduated with a Master's degree in Civil Engineering from the City College of New York in June 1974 and married Snigdha Misra in December 1975.
As newlyweds they had an active social life in some of America's greatest cities like New York and Philadelphia. Manojit and Snigdha remember these times fondly. After the birth of their daughter Ilina, and son Devraj, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Manojit moved the family to Columbus, Ohio in 1985 to work as an engineer at American Electric Power. Manojit and Snigdha knew that once their kids were of school age, they did not want to move the family anymore as they wanted their children to form lifelong friendships like they had.
Throughout his professional career, Manojit received a number of accolades for his exemplary work as an environmental engineer. In 2014, Manojit retired from American Electric Power after 30 years of service. Manojit enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, playing Bridge with friends, fishing, and staying on top of current events. However, his favorite thing to do was spend time with family and friends. Manojit had a great sense of humor. He could not only tell jokes but he could take them as well.
At his core, Manojit was a family man who consistently put his loved ones first. He loved and supported not only his immediate family but his extended family as well. He believed in always doing the right thing even when it wasn't the easy thing to do - a value he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Manojit is survived by his wife Snigdha, daughter Ilina, son Devraj, daughter-in-law Nidhi, grandchildren Amara (6) and Ayan (2), sister Sanjukta (Dutta), and brother Arijit. His grand dog, Darcy, will miss his cuddles and treats.
Services will be held at Newcomer Northwest Chapel 10051 Brewster Lane, Powell, OH 43065 on Saturday, July 8th at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) in Manojit's honor, an organization the Sukul family feels strongly about.
