Marie "Marraine" was born in Fexhe-Le-Haute-Clocher, Belgium on April 23rd 1923 along with her twin sister Antoinette to very devote Catholic parents Alexis and Marie Lavoix-Halleux. Her upbringing was very much oriented around the church and their family. Everyday the entire family would say the rosary kneeling on their kitchen chairs.
Starting at the age of 5 she attended the small Catholic school of Noville near their home. And at the age of 12 after her confirmation, she went to boarding school with her sister, where she stayed until WWII started.
Eventually she went to art school. She developed a passion for beautiful art. She took pleasure in gifting her paintings to friends and family.
All throughout her childhood and adult life, the love and respect of her parents and family was very evident. But most of all her faith was her guiding light. She loved reading about the Catholic religion and about history of WWII and gardening.
On June 17th 1959, Marie married Marcel Renwa and from that union Marie Antoinette was born. They established the family in Hollogne-aux-Pierres, Belgium, where Marie kept the family business in good order.
She had a special relationship with her daughter Marie Antoinette. She was always very encouraging and complimenting on the things she did. She especially loved the painting of the presbytery of her hometown that Marie Antoinette painted for her Christmas gift. Marie would always say that her and her mother and sister would walk in front of it every day on their way to church.
Marie had learned English in school and always tried her best to speak with friends. Her favorite phrase was, "I speak French". She loved visitors and entertaining. When Lexi Keller came into our lives, she embraced her with open arms and loved their lunch dates and teatime. She enjoyed Marie Clark's company and attempts at technological translations.
She loved to go on the road to enjoy the beautiful Ohio sceneries. And especially go to Amish country and visit her dear friends Henry and Gonny where they could have wonderful conversations. She loved the company of our friend, Dawn and sing along with her to "The Sanctus." One of her great joy was to receive Communion, every Sunday brought to her by our dear friend Michelle. They would exchange stories over tea and cookies.
Most of the car rides were spent saying the rosary. She loved to pray the rosary and was her daughter's guiding light in her prayers. Marie Antoinette is so blessed to have been able to say the rosary for so many years with her.
She was not one to gossip, but she was never afraid to let you know if you were out of line. She loved to pick playful fights, especially with Bob and Rita Bennett.
She loved keeping the house tidy and dusted and enjoyed her morning routine of dishes, dusting and sweeping and feeding the birds. She loved animals and loved her dogs so much that she fed from the table every day. She would play fetch with her German Shepherd, Max, and never stopped feeding her black Labrador, Tache lettuce (he was on a diet). She loved gardening and the dogs loved keeping her company.
She loved to be with her family and her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. All her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren were very special to her, and she loved them all. Marie loved to play army men with Gabriel. She enjoyed helping Marie Antoinette with Stella and seeing baby Adeline. And always loved it when Juliette would visit her.
She was proud of all her grandchildren. She was very happy when Natalie came back to live in America after a few years in Belgium. She was blessed to see Nicole becoming Catholic as well as Frank, Alexi, and Richard. And she was Nicole's confirmation godmother. Her biggest satisfaction was when Marie Antoinette came back to the Catholic church.
Marraine loved to see Miss Geannie who always was so sweet to her.
Richard was so devoted to all her needs, and she thought the world of him (as he could fix everything).
Her husband loved her cooking and would always tell her, "You cook better than in any restaurant". They would enjoy taking trips to France together where she would visit her cousins, while Marcel met with his music friends (Trompes de Chasse)
Marie and her twin sister Antoinette had a wonderful life together and a loving and deep relationship. They spend 94 years together. She showed great courage when her sister passed, which will help guide her family forward in their lives.
We will miss her wisdom and we will miss her greatly. We are at peace knowing that she is with Tata and all her family and friends in heaven.
