MARJORIE SMITH WIDNER
Marjorie Smith Widner, 91, former clerk treasurer of Pataskala, died Monday, June 26, 2006 at Mount Carmel East Hospital after a three-year battle with ill health. She was born on Main Street in Pataskala to a family whose ancestors were steeped in the town's establishment and history. She spent her childhood nurtured by smal1 town life, graduated from Pataskala High School and attended Miami University of Ohio. She traveled Europe, married, and when World War II broke out, worked for the Army Corps of Engineers. Along with many other generation, she started a victory garden, which led to her continuing interest in organic gardening. She served as clerk treasurer of Pataskala from 1962 through 1975 and was honored to be named grand marshal of the Pataskala Sesquicentennial celebration in 2001. She was a founding member of the civic group called Quest Club, was forever active in her church, volunteered for the American Cancer Society for almost 20 years, and built lasting friendships through her love of bridge. She is preceded in death by her son Christopher Carl Widner, husband Carl Edson Widner, brothers Elbert Moore Smith and John Howard Smith, sister-in-law Dorothy Smith, and parents Howard Bracken and Leila Moore Smith, all of Pataskala. She is survived by daughter Melissa Kay Widner of Upper Arlington, Oh. grandchildren, Jeremy, Chelsea and Adam Widner, daughter-in-law Eilizabeth Widner, sister-in-law Amelia Smith, all of Pataskala. She was surrounded by a large, loving extended family, and friends of many ages and background!; who enriched her life and who were in turn enriched by knowing her. She was insatiably curious about life and had a life-long love of books and learning. Gifts in her name may be made to the Pataskala .Public Library. Funeral arrangements are by Newcomer Funeral Home, 3047 East Dub1in-Granvill Road. Private interment will be at the Pataskala Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 8 at First Presbyterian Church, 405 South Main Street, Pataskala, Oh.
